These baked beans with BBQ sauce are made with canned beans, savory bacon, sauteed onions, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar.

Ingredients

  • Bacon: The best part of baked beans is the BACON! Fry up your favorite or you can use a couple of packages of real bacon pieces (but I think it tastes best with freshly cooked bacon!).
  • Onion: Onion fried in bacon grease enhances the flavor of the baked bean casserole.
  • Beans: We use canned pork and beans for this recipe but you can also make it with other types of canned beans. 
  • Brown Sugar: Since brown sugar comes with a touch of molasses it adds a rich balanced sweetness to the beans.
  • Mustard: Just a little bit of mustard to balance out the sweetness and smoky flavors.
  • BBQ Sauce: Your BEST BBQ sauce goes SOOOOOO good with these baked beans! We used our favorite Sweet Baby Ray’s.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This salty and savory sauce blends so well with all the other flavors bringing them together.

You will need a mixing bowl, measuring spoons, a mixing spoon, and a 9×13-inch baking dish.

How To Make BBQ Baked Beans From Scratch

  1. Cook. The chopped bacon and then remove from the pan. Add the onions to the remaining bacon grease and cook until tender. Combine the drained beans, bacon, and onions in a bowl.
  2. Measure. All the ingredients to season the beans.
  3. Add. The brown sugar, BBQ sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce to the beans, and onions.
  4. Mix. All the ingredients together until well blended.
  5. Bake: Pour the beans into a large baking dish and add the remaining bacon on top of the beans. Bake for 30 minutes or until a little brown and bubbly.

Recipe Tips & Variations

  • Vegetarian baked beans. If you want to make these meatless simply leave out the bacon! You can cook the onions in a bit of oil instead of the bacon grease.
  • Slow cooker baked beans. To make baked beans in a slow cooker, follow the recipe as written but add them to the slow cooker instead of placing them in the oven. Cook them on low heat for 4-6 hours.
  • Cook the onions in the bacon fat. It adds so much flavor so don’t skip this step!
  • Used canned baked beans for more flavor! These are already cooked in some seasonings and sauce so they bring even more flavor than plain canned beans.

We like to make this super easy so we use a couple of cans of pork and beans. Typically baked beans are made with small white beans such as northern beans but you can use whatever you like! Save time and use canned beans or you can soak and cook beans from scratch.

Can I make BBQ baked beans ahead of time?

You sure can! These homemade baked beans are PERFECT to make the night before and reheat when you’re ready to serve.

What To Serve With Baked Beans

Storing

  • Keep warm. When serving up for a group keep the beans warm in your crockpot. Transfer your cooked beans to your slow cooker and use the low or warm setting.
  • Store. Leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days.
  • Reheat. Baked beans in a saucepan or you can heat them in a baking dish in the oven until heated through. When using the oven method it’s a good idea to add more crispy bacon on top! If they seem a bit thick you can add some broth or water to thin out the sauce.
  • Freeze. For up to three months when stored in a freezer-safe container.

Ingredients
 

  • 12 slices bacon
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cans Pork and Beans, 16 ounces each
  • ¾ cup of brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons yellow mustard
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce, I use Sweet Baby Ray’s
  • cup of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and spray a large 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Cut up bacon into small pieces and cook until very crispy. Remove from grease and add bacon to a large bowl, reserving ½ cup of bacon for topping.
  • Add onions and saute in bacon grease. Add onions to bowl with the bacon.
  • Open each can of beans and pour off all the standing liquid on the top of the can. Add beans to the large bowl.
  • Add the brown sugar, mustard, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper; stir well.
  • Pour into a large baking dish and add the remaining bacon on top of the beans. Bake for 30 minutes or until a little brown and bubbly.
