How To Make The Best Potato Chip Dip

  1. Whip. In a large bowl, using an electric hand or stand mixer, whip cream cheese, chili sauce, and onion salt until creamy and smooth.
  2. Chill. Place the dip in a covered container. Put in refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight before serving.
  3. Enjoy. Serve with potato chips and enjoy.

Expert Tips

  • Start with softened cream cheese. The softened cheese will be so much easier to mix up. To soften cream cheese, place it out at room temperature for 1-2 hours, or until you can easily press into the cheese with your finger and leave an indent.
  • Make the dip ahead of time. This allows the dip to chill, set, and for the flavors to develop. It can also save you last-minute fuss before hosting. Instead, just remove the dip from the fridge right before serving. Super easy!
  • Add additional onion salt to taste. If you like your dip on the more salty or savory side, stir extra salt into the dip by ¼ teaspoon or until your liking.
  • Double the recipe. If you are making dip for a large group, this recipe is very easy to multiply. Just double or triple the ingredients by the desired amount and follow the recipe directions as listed.

Recipe Mix-Ins

Though this truly is the best dip for potato chips as-is, you can make it your own by stirring in any of the following mix-ins:

  • Bacon Bits – Just ½ cup of the bits will add an extra smoky and salty dimension to this recipe. Use store-bought bacon bits or chopped-up home-cooked bacon.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese – ½ cup of sharp cheddar or sharp white cheddar cheese will complement the savory tang of the dip just perfectly.
  • Sliced Green Onions – Add an earthy and light peppery finish to the dip by stirring in 2 or 3 sliced green onions.

Lower Fat Variation

To lighten up this chip dip made with cream cheese, all you need to do is substitute reduced-fat or Neufchâtel cream cheese for the traditional cream cheese.

What To Serve With Potato Chip Dip

As the recipe title implies, this is one of the best dip recipes for potato chips but it is also amazing with crackers, pretzels, tortilla chips, Fritos, and more. I even love it with french fries!

The dip is a popular one at parties and tailgates, but it’s also great at potlucks, picnics, or barbecues, and any other time chips and dip are called for!
