AIR FRYER TATER TOTS RECIPE

These Air Fryer Tater Tots are a HEALTHIER game day snack or side dish that tastes way better than a frozen bag of tater tots. They’re crispy and salty and can even be frozen to make later.

AIR FRYER TATER TOTS

Purchasing an Air Fryer was one of the biggest game-changers ever! These Air Fryer tater tots taste so fresh and crispy and only take eight ingredients to make. You only need about 30 minutes of prep time, and then your Air Fryer does the rest of the work!

The Air Fryer gives these delicious tater tots the perfect amount of crunch, and they don’t fall apart like oven-baked tater tots usually do. While these tater tots do take a little more time to make than just cracking open a bag from the freezer, the taste is so worth it!

TATER TOTS MADE IN THE AIR FRYER

Tater tots are a fantastic side dish or a game day treat, but many of them require you to deep fry if you want that same crispy, crunchy texture. Getting that same delicious flavor but without adding too much oil to these tater tots makes these a lot healthier and taste way better.

These tater tots make a great game day snack for a tailgate or football game day at home too! Since they’re so delicious but a little time consuming, I highly recommend you make a batch for the freezer to save some time later.

KITCHEN TOOLS YOU MIGHT NEED

For this tater tot air fryer recipe, you’ll want to make sure you have these tools available:

  • AIR FRYER: A good quality air fryer is a MUST! A premium or elite air fryer model will yield best results.
  • COOKING POT: A good stainless steel cooking pot is a MUST for potatoes!
  • CHEESE GRATER: A cheese grater is used for shredding the potatoes in this recipe. I highly recommend a good sturdy box grater to make it easy.

WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER?

If you’re not familiar with air fryers, they’re basically a deep fryer’s healthier cousin. They operate with oil and hot air that circulates down and around the food placed into a basket. The hot air circulates at a very fast pace in order to give you very crispy snacks, appetizers, and other food types.

I think the best part though is how EASY cleanup is!! Each part that needs cleaning can be placed in the dishwasher. WIN!

WHAT ARE THE BEST POTATOES FOR HOMEMADE TATER TOTS?

While you CAN use any potato, there’s a bit of a science here. Yukon, Russet, and red potatoes each have the differences in flavor and consistency. I highly encourage you to use russet potatoes like I did for the fact that they will hold up best vs turning into complete mush when they hit your air fryer.

You still want to use those tongs though since they’re so tender at first before crisping up. While russet potatoes hold up better, you’ll still need to be careful so they don’t fall apart.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COOK AIR FRYER TATER TOTS?

The cook time between boiling and frying will be about 25 minutes. Every air fryer is different though, so you may need to adjust the cooking time depending on your model. For best results, keep your eye on your homemade tater tots and use your best judgement for doneness.

WHAT TEMPERATURE DO YOU FRY TATER TOTS?

Temperature will also vary! This depends on your model of air fryer much like cooking time. If they are a bit too crisp for your liking, you’ll want to lower the temperature. On the flip side, you’ll want to increase the temperature if they’re taking too long (just make sure to turn them more often to ensure even cooking).

WHAT DO I SERVE WITH HOMEMADE TATER TOTS?

The best thing about air fryer sides like these tater tots is that while they are a GREAT side, they are also the perfect snack. Serve them with ketchup, hot sauce, sour cream, or even some homemade ranch. I LOVE dipping mine in ketchup! Use cooked bacon pieces, green onions, fresh chives, or parsley for garnish.

If you’re using them for a side, try pairing them with these dinner ideas:

CAN I FREEZE THESE TATER TOTS FOR LATER?

Yes! If you will be freezing these tater tots to make later, make your tots slightly bigger and decrease the cooking time just a bit. Then, place them onto a plate or tray and put them into the freezer until they are completely frozen. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag. Use within about 3-4 months for best results.

When you’re ready to cook these tater tots, spray with oil and place them frozen in the air fryer at 400 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. Shake the tray every few minutes and cook until they are golden brown.

Notes

  • Wax paper or foil can be used in place of parchment paper.
  • Adjust cooking time as needed depending on your air fryer.
  • Adjust temperature as needed. If they're getting dark quickly, lower the temp. If taking too long, increase the temp and turn tots more frequently.
  • Freeze for later if desired by decreasing the cooking time and placing on a tray until completely frozen. Transfer to a bag and use within 2-3 months. Cook at 400F for 10-12 minutes when ready.
  • Since most air fryers have a locking mechanism on them, you'll need to slide it back into place to close your air fryer again.
  • Make sure to use tongs to turn the tots to avoid them falling apart. Once they start to crisp, you can shake them to turn instead.
