- Perfect to make and carry on the go! I love making up this smoothie and having it in a cup that I can drink as I’m headed to work.
- Simple ingredients that are easy to keep in the fridge and freezer to whip up a breakfast shake whenever you need it.
- So quick to make. All you have to do is add everything to a blender and puree!
Breakfast Shake Ingredients
To make this breakfast smoothie, you will need:
- Orange juice: This adds a sweet fruity base to the smoothie. You can also experiment with different juices to create different flavors.
- Yogurt: I prefer vanilla yogurt but you can use any flavored yogurt in your smoothie.
- Vanilla extract: Adding a small amount of vanilla extract really helps bring out the flavors in the fruit!
- Mixed berries: Frozen mixed berries are a simple ingredient to keep on hand to make a smoothie any time you want. You can use any berries you like.
- Ice cubes: I suggest adding a handful of ice cubes if you don’t use frozen fruit to make your smoothie.
How To Make An Energy Smoothie
To make this breakfast energy smoothie, simply:
- Place all the ingredients into a blender. Start with the liquid ingredients first and the fruit last.
- Blend on high for 2 minutes or until the mixture is smooth. Stop the blender to scrape down the sides and blend for another 30 seconds.
- Serve and enjoy!
Tips & Variations
- Add Some Protein: When I don’t have time to make breakfast, I add my favorite protein powder to this smoothie. I love that I can’t taste the protein powder (I hate the taste of protein powder) but I know it’s there because it keeps me full until lunchtime. You can also add nut butter as a source of protein too.
- Use Frozen Fruit: I like to use frozen fruit instead of ice cubes in my smoothies. It makes it smoother and less icy but also makes the recipe super easy. I just buy the chopped frozen mixed berries in the frozen section of my grocery store, because I’m all about making things quicker and easier!
- Fill Up Your Blender in the Right Order: You always want to layer your ingredients from the softest to the hardest (frozen) in the container. This makes it easier to blend. So start with the orange juice, vanilla extract, and yogurt. Last, add fresh or frozen fruit.
- Different Fruits: Feel free to mix and match fruit flavors as you prefer. Sometimes I add a bit of frozen banana for extra creaminess.
Recipe FAQ
It is definitely a quick option for busy mornings. Just make sure you don’t overload it with lots of sugar and make sure you have a source of protein in it.
A mixture of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fat are great ways to make an energizing smoothie that keeps you satiated and your energy levels higher. Nuts, nut butter, pumpkin seeds, and even protein powders are easy ingredients you can add for more protein while avocado, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flaxseed are all easy ways to add healthy fats.
Storing
- Store. If you have some leftover smoothie mixture, store it in the fridge for later. Once you’re ready to drink it, add a little extra yogurt to the smoothie to thicken it up again. You can also blend it again with a bit more ice or frozen fruit. It will last for up to five days.

I love this smoothie, the color is pretty, and most of all it tastes so incredibly amazing and I will definitely start making for me before school.
Great recipe! I think I’ll give it a go tomorrow, I might even add a spoonful of honey to mix things up! Or maybe I should say to blend things up?
