Homemade Biscuits

Fluffy, buttery biscuits with all the layers! These Homemade Biscuits are made with simple ingredients and are easy to make.

  • Fresh. Homemade biscuits are made from scratch using fresh ingredients, so they have a superior taste and texture compared to store-bought biscuits. Fresh baked is always better!
  • Perfect for a Crowd. This recipe makes 40 delicious rolls! It’s great for a large group.
  • Leftover. Because this recipe makes so many biscuits, they make great leftovers throughout the week. Or you can freeze the extras for another day.
  • Versatile. These biscuits can be served with butter and jam, as a side for soups and stews, or as part of a biscuit sandwich. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they are a hit!

Ingredients For Homemade Biscuits

Ingredients displayed for homemade biscuits.
  • Instant yeast. I like using instant yeast for this recipe. It helps the biscuits rise and become light and fluffy.
  • Warm water. It’s important to use warm water to activate the yeast and help it dissolve properly. Don’t use hot water or it will kill the yeast!
  • All-purpose flour. Using all-purpose flour gives the biscuits that just right texture.
  • Milk. This is used in many biscuit recipes and gives the flavor a richer taste. It also gives it a perfect moisture. Make sure to cool it to lukewarm once boiled so you don’t kill the yeast.
  • Granulated sugar. While these aren’t sweet biscuits, the sugar adds the perfect sweetness and helps the biscuits brown.
  • Salt. Use normal iodized salt to help enhance the other ingredients and overall flavors.
  • Malt powder. Have you ever baked with malt powder? It adds a subtle but great flavor and helps the biscuits brown.
  • Butter. I used unsalted butter for this recipe. It goes in the recipe but also use some to brush the tops of the baked biscuits.
  • Eggs. Eggs are a great way to bind the ingredients together. Use room-temperature eggs while baking for better results.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Cold Ingredients. Cold butter and cold milk help create a flaky texture in biscuits. Chill your butter and liquid ingredients before using them.
  • Don’t overmix. Overmixing the dough can lead to tough biscuits. Mix the dough just until it comes together and then stop!
  • Parchment Paper. Use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent the biscuits from sticking.
  • Brush with butter. For extra flavor and a golden brown finish, brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter right when they come out of the oven.
  • Rest. Let the biscuits rest for a few minutes before serving to allow them to set.
  • Cinnamon Butter. Serve with Land O Lakes Cinnamon Sugar Butter for a tasty treat.

How To Make Homemade Biscuits

Step by step process photos for homemade biscuits.
  1. Boil. Bring a medium-size pot of milk to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool to lukewarm. Once the milk is cooled down, add the water and the yeast and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Mix. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt, and malt powder. Add in the melted butter and mix by hand or with a stand mixer.
  3. Knead. Add the milk and eggs and mix until the dough does not stick to the sides of the bowl. About 5-8 minutes of kneading the dough. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for a few more minutes.
  4. Rise. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray, place dough into the bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for 1 hour at room temperature or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape. Once double in size, punch your dough. Place on a floured surface and cut the dough into 40 even pieces. Shape them into balls. Add the shaped dough on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and let them rise for another 30-40 minutes.
  6. Bake. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F and bake for 15-18 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush each bun with melted butter, and serve with cinnamon butter.

Leftovers & Storing

  • Store. Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container on the counter top for up to 5 days. They are best fresh out of the oven! Reheat them in the microwave for 10 seconds to get that tasty out of the oven taste.
  • Frozen. This makes a great frozen recipe. Once cooled, freeze leftover rolls in a freezer-friendly container. When ready to eat thaw in the refrigerator and microwave for 10 seconds to warm.
